My thoughts on the season
As most of us know, this was my first season as the assistant varsity coach at Harborfields High School. I have been a coach for many years, coaching a variety of levels, but this year and this season was very special to me.
From the very beginning, I was so excited to be a part of this team. Coach Thomas had asked me to be a part of the team for a little while, and I think it was the best decision I could have made. Harborfields School District is completely different from the previous school that I was at. You are all a close knit community and the love and support you have for your school programs is overwhelming! I knew this summer, when I got the opportunity to coach the girls in the Monday and Tuesday night practices and the 7v7 tournament that I was embarking on a journey that I would never forget.
The 2011-2012 team will always have a special place in my heart. I have never coached a team in which every single individual gave their hearts and souls at practices and games everyday, and was eager to learn more. I have had the privilege this year to coach bright, funny and caring young ladies, and I am so excited to come back next year and do it again.
To the seniors, Kelly, Honey, Allie and Kasey: Thank you so much for all that you have done not only for this year, but for the past four years. Like Coach Thomas said, your contributions these past four years have made the program it is today and I don't think we could ever fully replace what you four have left. It has been my privilege and honor to coach you this year; my only regret is that I had coached you all (at HFFH) sooner. I know that you will all be successful in your future endeavors and I wish you Good Luck next year and the years to come! I expect you all to visit and keep in touch!
I would also like the thank all of the parents, especially Mrs. Santomauro for everything you have done for the team. You have all made me feel so welcomed here and I cannot thank you enough!!

Quick recap of the remainder of the season
I have to apologize for my lack of commitment to this blog for the past few weeks. Between personal endeavors, work and hockey, I have not had a free moment to write and keep you all in the loop! That will change! Let me catch up with the rest of the season and how the girls did.
The last game we played was against Huntington.... which means the next game we played was Ward Melville. This game (10/17) was probably one of the best games the girls played all season! Allie Gold had an OUTSTANDING game (and was also our player of the game). The team played collectively as unit and Morgan Lange played phenomenally in goal with 8 saves. Though the girls lost 1-0, being scored on with four minutes left in the game, it did not feel like a loss. The girls played with class and charisma and the coaching staff was thrilled!
On Wed Oct 19, the HFFH played #1 sead Sachem East and put up quite a fight. Although the girls lost 5-2, the game was very exciting to watch. Sachem East was 3-0 when HFFH was awarded a penalty stroke, which Kasey Stolba scored and two minutes later Gigi Santomauro scored off a corner making it a lose 3-2. The Flaming arrows however found the back of the net twice more to bring the lead up. Kasey Stolba was named player of the game.
On Fri Oct 21, the girls played Smithtown East in probably the most exciting game all season. The girls came back from a 1-0 deficit after the first half and brought the 2nd place team to OT and then strokes. Isabelle Wechsler scored the goal, which was assisted by Kaitlin Cassar. Caroline Saros stepped into the starting line and played an outstanding game. For this, she was our player of the game.
On Monday October 24, the HFFH played Half Hollow Hills and had another great performance, this time, they were able to clench the W! 20 of our 22 girls were able to see playing time and contributed much to the girls success! Katie DeNicola had 2 goals and an assist, Kasey Stolba had 1 goal and 2 assists, Kaitlin Cassar also scored a goal that was assisted by Daniele Miltner. Both goalies got equal playing time and over all the team did a great job! Player of the Game: Katie DeNicola
Wednesday Oct 26 was the last game of the season and the girls played Sachem North. Although the girls dominated throughout the entire game, the Sachem North Arrows persistance took the tornadoes into sudden death strokes and clenched the W! Kasey Stolba had the loan goal of the game and Kelly Malico was named player of the game ! Chandler banks was the starting goalie and did an amazing job in goal! Not only did she play well, but she showed great sportsmanship and leadership.
After the season ended, the coaching staff when to the seating meeting to see where we would place for playoffs. Because of our win against Rocky Point this year, we were required to be ranked above them. AND being the Rocky Point was named Division 2 Champions, HFFH was ranked second for the Class B playoff seating!! This is a first for HFFH season!! The seating for the B- Class stood as following:
1) Sayville
2) Harborfields
3) Rocky Point
4) SWR
5) Miller Place
6) South Hampton
7) Greenport/Shelter Island
Also, a congratulations to 4 JV players for getting moved up to varsity. Claudia Maimon, Nicole Damm, Carley Coyle and Liz Berkery. !
First the first playoff game, the HFFH team played Greenport/ Shelter Island at HFFH on 11/1. It was a beautiful day in November and the girls had prepared all week for this match. Unaware of what to expect, the girls game out fighting hard! The girls had worked all season long for this moment and they all wanted the W. The end result: HFFH wins 3-1!! Goals were scored by Kasey Stolba, Isabelle Wecshler and Katie DeNicola. Gigi Santomaruo and Kasey Stolba each had assist to follow Wex's and Katie's goals. Chandler was our goal keeper for the game and she had 4 saves!
Following the game, the HFFH program held its senior recognition night. THANK YOU to all the parents, families, friends and team members who contributed food, beverages and support for this occasion. Coach Emily and Thomas, with a little help by me, made an amazing highlight tape that the team watched together. It was a great way to end a great day!!
After the win against Greenport meant that HFFH was going to face the winner of Rocky Point and South Hampton. Rocky Point won, meaning that HFFH had to face them again. Knowing that it was going to be a tough match, the girls prepared for the biggest game of the season. Unfortunately, the outcome was not as we hoped or planned. Rocky Point scored three goals beating HFFH 3-0. No loss is ever easy, and this is no exception. It was the official last day of the season, and it was over way too soon.
